Even Balance has not disclosed what hardware Punk Buster looks for when issuing a ban, but close examination of the software has indicated that the GUID may be based on the serial numbers of scanned hard-drives.
As with many bans based off information from the user's system, hardware GUID bans can be spoofed.
Punk Buster is developed and published by Even Balance, Inc.
The first beta of Punk Buster was announced on September 21, 2000 for Half-Life.
"We have confirmed that Violation #89265 may be triggered by non-cheat software.
The first game in which Punk Buster was integrated was id Software's Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Most attempts at cheating will only receive a detection warning, but cheats that interfere with Punk Buster's software itself could lock out the GUID of the offending system and disable access to all Punk Buster enabled servers for that particular game.Particularly severe instances of cheating may lock the offending computer out of all Punk Buster-protected games. Some 64-bit games are not compatible with Punk Buster, requiring the user to play the 32bit version of the game to play online. Some older games that use Punk Buster require an administrator account to play online properly.Starting with PB client v1.700, a Windows service with full administrative rights is used in complement with the ingame Punk Buster client, allowing updates without user rights elevation. However, some games might still require administrative rights before Punk Buster will function correctly.) or parts of the computer's hardware are banned from Punk Buster-enabled servers.Once it has been added to the main window, select the game then select check for updates. If there is an update available, Punk Buster will then install it.Most games that require Punk Buster for multiplayer will install it when the game itself is installed. In cases where it isn't, details on installing Punk Buster can be found at their website.
